Customs and Excise Officials detain a cross border truck

Customs and Excise Officials at the Katwitwi border post in Namibia's north-eastern Kavango region have detained a cross border truck loaded with 991 boxes of counterfeit cigarettes and 90 boxes of stoves.

The value of the goods that were destined for Angola has not yet been determined.

The Public Relations Officer in the Ministry of Finance told NBC News and Current Affairs at Rundu that the truck was detained on Monday evening after officials at the border post were provided with a false declaration.

Aldrin Manyando said the truck came from Walvis Bay and was on its way to Angola through the Katwitwi border post.

Manyando noted that on Tuesday the customs and excise officials were verifying the consignment when they discovered that the goods contained in the truck were contrary to what was declared.

The customs and excise officials together with the Namibian Police are accompanying the truck and its contents to Windhoek.
