Works and Transport Deputy Minister, Paul Smit and the German Minister of Economic Co-operation and Development, Dirk Niebel jointly inaugurated the Oshakati-Ompundja road in the Oshana region over the weekend.

The 26-kilometer road was constructed through labor-intensive methods, that involved six different Small and Medium Enterprises as well as one main contractor to construct a culvert extension.

The Ompundja district road was constructed in 1999 but has been extensively damaged by floods over the past two years.

Works and Transport Deputy Minister, Paul Smit said because of last year's heavy floods, his Ministry needed more than half a billion dollars to repair damaged roads, for which only about one-hundred million dollars could be secured.

The rehabilitation of the Ompundja gravel road is expected to bring some relief to the communities and road-users, especially during the rainy season.

The Ompundja-Oshakati road rehabilitation was co-funded by the German government.

The twenty year old development partnership between Namibia and Germany has been characterized by friendship and trust and aims to improve the living conditions of formerly disadvantaged Namibians and make headway in development in the northern regions.

The German Minister of Economic Co-operation and Development, Dirk Niebel said the necessary infrastructure should be in place for economic growth and development to take place, in order to give people easy access to schools, hospitals and employment.

Niebel said the Namibian-German co-operation in road construction had seen the construction and rehabilitation of some 240 kilometers of districts roads, resulting in improved access to much needed services.

The Oshana Regional Governor, Clemens Kashuupulwa underscored the importance of road infrastructural development to his region.

Kashuupulwa said accessibility to road infrastructure in his region would also promote individual access to growth centres and facilitate better communication between urban and rural areas.
