Oshana Regional Council concludes training on the use of boats and canoes

Published: February 8th, 2010

The Regional Council of Oshana region has concluded a five-day training exercise on the use of boats and canoes in flood rescue operations.

The training follows a similar one held at Rundu in the Kavango region last month.

It was conducted by instructors from the Namibian Police and Defence Force.

The boats were acquired through the Prime Minister's Office last year, while the canoes were purchased by the regional council from Caprivi region.

The move by the regional council to acquire rescue boats came after residents form Okatjali bought three canoes last year which have been distributed in the constituency and operated by community members.

The devastating floods experienced over the past two years in the northern and north-eastern regions, have prompted the regional government to put preparedness measures in place to mitigate the effects of floods.

About fifty people took part in the training programme, which ended last Friday.
