Chairperson of National Council urges all Namibians to ensure that up-coming elections are peaceful

Published: February 8th, 2010

The National Council resumed today to re-view the 2009 Tobacco Bill that was passed in the National Assembly last year.

In his opening remarks,  the Chairperson of the National Council, Asser Kapere, urged all Namibians to ensure that the up-coming Regional and Local Authorities elections, scheduled to take place in November this year, are peaceful, while maintaining a spirit of peace, unity and national reconciliation at all times, despite the many challenges facing the nation.

Kapere states that the coming elections are very important for the Council as it marks the end of the third term of members and the beginning of the fourth term for the National Council and the Regional Government.

Kapere also applauded President Hifikepunye Pohamba and the SWAPO party for their resounding victory in last year's Presidential and National Assembly elections, saying it showed the confidence of Namibians in electing their own government.

The National Council then adjourned until tomorrow morning.
