Child Welfare Services to engage society in efforts to address the problem of street children

Published: February 8th, 2010

The Director of Child Welfare Services in Namibia says they intend engaging society in efforts to address the problem of street children this year.

Helena Andjamba said the directorate has introduced measures to engage all relevant parties in addressing the problem of street children.

For this, they have approached non-Governmental organizations for assistance in providing shelter to these children and to re-integrate them into society.

Andjamba said society should move away from the notion of expecting Government institutions to address the issue of street children, adding that society also has a role to play in addressing social problems, and to assist Government efforts.

She said various programs and forums are planned for the year to involve society in solving the issue of street children and their integration.

She made the remarks at a ceremony during which the Directorate received the award for Best Services in the Ministry for the second year in a row.
