1st December 1969 was the dawn for the Damara/Nama
Language to be heard for the first time on the FM-transmitters of
the then SOUTH AFRICAN BROADCASTING CORPORATION within the borders
of Namibia.
This was a modest beginning where the Damara/Nama speaking citizens
within a radius of 60 kilometres in and around Windhoek, capital city
of Namibia could listen to their own vernacular. This Radio Service
started with only four Announcers/Producer/Translators (Willem Enos
Abraham Teister, Chris ¹Obeb, Salmon Cooper and Abed Ganaseb)
Expansion of Transmitter network was a continuous process, which resulted
in a contribution Centre at Khorixas and Keetmanshoop. The Khorixas
Contribution Centre was later on shifted to Otjiwarongo. The further
expansion of transmitter Network throughout the country made it possible
that additional Announcers/Producers/Translators were appointed. Producers
increased from four to 16 in 1979.
The Damara/Nama Service used to share one channel with the Otjiherero
Radio Service but became a fully-fledged service with its own broadcast
channel in 1975 and started broadcasting from 06:00 until 22:00 (Monday
– Sunday).
The Damara/Nama Service is broadcasting from Windhoek with ten producers
and is assisted through two contributions Centres at Keetmanshoop
and Otjiwarongo each one having a producer on its own. Presently,
the Damara/Nama Service transmissions start at 07:10 until 21:00 from
Mondays to Sundays. |
