On 2 November 1979 the only Radio Station on the African continent broadcasting in the German language was founded by the former SWABC. This language service started off with two broadcasting hours per week.
Over the last 25 years of transmission the NBC's German Service has grown steadily and currently features a multi-faceted program amounting to 105 broadcast hours per week. The schedule includes information on politics, economics, sport, cultural and social events, as well as phone-ins, discussion and entertainment shows, rounded off by a wide variety of classical and pop music.
The German Service aims to promote and preserve the German-Namibian culture within the population across all languages. Its mission is to build bridges between different cultures and languages, to foster the understanding amongst all citizens and thereby contribute towards a unified and diversified Namibia. The promotion of the German language and culture within Namibia is reflected in the strive for high quality and professional programs.
Currently the German Service consists of one Programme Organiser Ms. Michaela Jaeger, Senior Administrative Officer Ms. Irene Eysselein, Executive Producers Ms. Gabriele Moldzio and Ms. Inke Stoldt, Specialist Producer Mr. Wilfried Hähner, Senior Producer Ms. Natascha Scheidt, as well as Producer Ms. Naita Hishoono. The longest standing producer at the German Service and an icon in the German speaking community, as well as an expert in classical music, Mr. Freddy Frewer is employed on a contract basis. The German Service makes use of a number of freelancers and currently has two vacancies.
